C. catus was first discovered in human feces in the 70s. When observing C. catus in the microscope, they are visible as paired cocci. Microbes belonging to this species are well known for their unique ability to produce both Butyrate and Propionate. It has been positively associated with recovery of the microbiome after antibiotic treatment. The genus Coprococcus correlated with the samples from the healthy control group in a comparative study with colorectal cancer patients.
