C. albicans is considered a key colonizer of the human gut. Right after birth this species of Candida can already be detected in infants. It contributes to the development of a mature and balanced immune response, and offers protection against colitis and influenza A virus infections. However, an unusually high abundance of C. albicans can point to inflammatory bowel disease, alcohol-associated liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis, and even, deadly infections.
