N. galbrata used to be known as Candida galbrata. It is an opportunistic pathogen that has a high resistance to commonly used antifungal drugs. While it has been isolated from the human gut and vaginal flora, its primary natural habitat is unknown. It is therefore considered a nomadic species, equipped with the potential to occupy many different ecological niches. N. galbrata ranks second as a cause of candidiasis in North America and Europe, affecting primarily immune-compromised patients.
