Clostridium scindens is controversial due to its ability to convert the bile acid that humans produce into a specific toxic form. Bile acid in this secondary form is said to be correlated with cancer, but it is also associated with the protection of the gut against C. dificile, specifically. This is why we have listed this organism as beneficial. Eating a diet high in animal protein and fat lead to more bile acid in the gut.
