Bifidobacterium lactis is one of the best-documented probiotics. It is weakly associated with increasing stool frequency in idividuals with low frequency while not increasing diarrhea. Moreover, it seems to support the immune system against pathogens especially in infections of the upper-respiratory tract. While B. lactis is certified to be safe, none of the associated health claims have been approved in Europe yet. However, its benefits have been acknowledged by regulatory authorities of Canada and Japan. There are no reports on harmful effects.
