L. paracasei is employed in the fermentation of dairy products but also found naturallly in the human gastrointestinal tract. It is a close relative of L. casei and L. rhamnosus. It has been shown to inhibit Salmonella enterica and Helicobacter pylori. In addition, it was shown to speed up the remission of ulcerative colitis when taken in addition to conventional treatment, and has been shown to reduce symptoms in allergic rhinitis. However, there have also been rare reports on L. paracasei involved in bacteremia and endocarditis.
