Cryptococcus neoformans
Cryptococcus species cause a severe fungal disease called Cryptococcosis. The airborne spores are primarily breathed in and can then lie dormant between 6 weeks to 2 years, before causing visible signs of the disease. People with reduced immune function are most at risk. C. gattii is associated with trees, specifically decaying wood, bark, leaves, flowers, soil, and debris from tree hollows.
