Cryptococcus gattii VGI
Cryptococcus species cause a severe fungal disease called Cryptococcosis. The airborne spores are primarily inhaled and can then lie dormant between 6 weeks to 2 years, before causing visible signs of the disease. People with reduced immune function are most at risk. C. neoformans is found in droppings of all kinds of birds.
